The perfect way to practice shapes, letters and numbers is with food! You can make this pretzel dough and give each child a chance to create their own shapes, letters, or numbers. You can also have fun teaching children how to make the traditional pretzel shape!
Ingredients
- 1 packet of active dry yeast
- 4 cups of flour
- 1 ½ cups of warm water
- 1 teaspoon of salt
- Melted butter or 1 egg
- Coarse salt or sugar and cinnamon (optional for sprinkling on top)
Directions
- Mix all the dry ingredients together, except the coarse salt, sugar, and cinnamon if using.
- Add the warm water to the bowl and mix together. Using your hands to mix will be easier than a spoon.
- Separate the dough into small balls. (This recipe should make about 11-12 small balls)
- Give each child a small ball of dough and have them make the desired shape. If making letters, numbers or shapes, a flashcard with that item on it may make it easier for children to re-create it.
- Help small hands to roll the dough into long ropes so they can make their letter, number or shape.
- Once finished, you can spread some beaten egg or melted butter over the dough and either sprinkle with a bit of sugar/cinnamon or coarse salt.
- Bake on 350°F for about 12-15 minutes or until pretzels are golden brown.
- Enjoy your pretzels!
